The Flight Before Christmas, Friday Dec. 12

Mucho gusto to all our friends celebrating the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe today.  At least, I hope that’s the right expression – my Spanish is, unfortunately, not that good.

Beyond that, please note that The Family Entertainment Awards are airing tonight at 9 p.m. on The CW.  Tyler James Williams, who plays Chris on Everybody Hates Chris, is hosting.  Can’t say I’m that excited about it, but it’s there.

What I am excited about is The Flight Before Christmas, airing on CBS at 10 p.m.  Haven’t been approved by the CBS press site yet, so I don’t have a picture for you.

It’s the animated story of Niko, a young reindeer whose missing dad is supposedly part of Santa’s Flying Forces.  After viscious wolves attack his herd, he runs away to the North Pole accompanied by Julius, a flying squirrel and surrogate parent.  The wolves, who are predators and hungry, decide to follow Niko and hit the big score – Santa’s reindeer.  Of course, the whole thing ends happily with the message that it’s not genes, but who’s willing to be there that counts in the parenting game.

Which I thoroughly agree with.  In fact, saw a blog post from the New York Times blog Motherlode that talked about how we define our family relations – this time by a mother of an adopted daughter.  It’s like we’re still stuck in these outmoded views of what constitutes a family and forms outside of the mom, dad, kids set-up are still somewhat stigmatized.

Anyway, it’s nice to see stuff on TV that recognizes the reality that single moms do result from inappropriate encounters, although part of me does wish that Santa’s Flying Forces could exhibited some more responsible behavior.  Oh well.  Flight Before Christmas is still quite enjoyable.
