If you’ve got boys in late elementary and middle school and they love to skateboard, has Disney XD got a show for them. I mean, that’s exactly who they’re pitching it to. The only problem is if those same boys have anything resembling brains (which would probably include most boys), they might find the show more than a little on the stupid side.
Zeke and Luther are 15-year-0ld skateboarders with big dreams, decent skills and a lot of space between their ears. Why this is supposed to be funny completely escapes me. There is also the predictable much smarter younger sibling, in this case, a money-savvy sister named Ginger, determined to get her cut of anything older brother Zeke makes.
The parents, on the other hand, seem to be completely missing – no hint or mention of them in the pilot airing tonight. Nor could I bear the thought of watching another episode or two to see if they show up.
In the pilot, the boys get hooked into doing a skateboard demo for a local business man, with younger sister setting up a cool deal, including a night in a motel. I won’t say how, but the guys get into trouble, barely make it to the show and you already know what happens to Ginger’s money after the night in the motel.
If the writing is bad, the acting is even worse. Adam Hicks, who plays free-spirit Luther, comes off as putting the character on instead of creating a real person. Hutch Dano, as Zeke, is only marginally better.
It’s just, sadly, not a very good show. And chances are, some boys are going to love it.
