The show may be about brand-new cops, but it’s more like a competent veteran of the genre than anything that fresh or new. Somewhat predictable in its plotting, the actors give it an amiability that makes it watchable.
The show mostly focuses on Andy McNally (Missy Peregrym), the daughter of a washed-up former cop. McNally is earnest as all get-out, but with that raw cluelessness that is part of being new to a very demanding, scary job. So naturally, her first day out, she arrests fellow officer Sam Swarek (Ben Bass), who’s working undercover, and totally messes up his case. Hmm. Do we see potential romantic attachment? Then there’s that cute homicide detective, too.
Safety-wise, it’s a show about cops, ergo, there’s some violence. But it shows more of the effects of the violence than the actual guns blazing. There’s some implied sexual activity that might go over the head of a 10-year-old. It’s clean language-wise, but parents with concerns about alcohol consumption might find the bar scenes a little worrisome. The show begins and ends in the bar and they are drinking rather heavily.
But overall, it’s a decent show. I wasn’t enthralled, but I wasn’t repelled, either. If you need a cop fix, it’ll do quite nicely and the kids won’t get too much of a negative education.
