FROM THE EDGE WITH PETER LIK

Friendly Rating: Elementary age and older.

Safety Rating: Almost completely safe.

Quality Rating: Amazing visuals, some room for squirmy-ness.

New series premieres tonight on The Weather Channel at 8 p.m.

There are two really good things going for this doc/nature series featuring Australian photographer Peter Lik. One is that he is truly an amazing photographer. The other is that the show is only half an hour.

It’s a nature doc without animals, so it’s about as safe as it can get, even if Mother Nature can be a bit on the violent side, herself.

The visuals are the main thing with this show, though. Yeah, I know, The Weather Channel? But why not? And there’s a lot of weather in this show.

The only problem I have with it is that you’re not going to learn that much about photography. Lik does explain what he’s doing some of the time. And he does talk a little bit about the environments he’s in. But this show is solidly about the visuals – and they are incredible.

If you have a budding young photographer, this might be the perfect show. Or it might stimulate an interest in photography. The good news is that you can do a lot even with a relatively inexpensive point and shoot camera these days, so let your kids experiment, and let us know how and what they do.
