DR. SEUSS’ HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS and SHREK THE HALLS

We’ve got two classic holiday specials up tonight, starting at 8 p.m. on ABC.

First up, the real one (as in forget the live action flick with Jim Carrey), the animated half hour special Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas, a favorite in this household, since my beloved spouse is, in fact, a complete Grinch and proud of it.

The second is fast becoming a classic around here, at least, and that’s the DreamWorks special Shrek the Halls, at 8:30 on ABC. Like the Shrek films that inspired it, this one has all the fun of basic slapstick humor and kid-friendly fun, while winking at the parents with gags we’ll get but the kids will have to wait a few years for. Personally, the best part of holiday specials is that they do bring a certain continuity and tradition to the whole holiday madness. Yeah, I get that it’s all about selling stuff. But we can work around that.
