Random Thoughts, Monday, Aug. 6

First up, a quick shout out to my beloved spouse whose birthday it is today – Happy birthday, Lover!

As far as new programming goes, there isn’t much coming up this week – you think it might have something to do with the Olympic Games? So here are a few random thoughts rattling around in my brain whilst I recover from the TV Critics Association Press Tour.

If there’s going to be one issue this fall, it’s going to be violence. Most of the dramas are really pushing the envelope on that one, so keep that in mind as your kids start clamoring to see one show or another.

I’m hearing rumors that more and more networks are going to require cable company accounts before they’ll let you access their content online. Feh – another way to rip us off, I say. I get that Internet advertising does not pay as well as broadcast or even pay TV advertising, but still it feels icky. I know NBC got a lot of folks torqued off at them because they weren’t able to stream live Olympics events unless they had pay TV.

I am more convinced than ever that a great party or press conference cannot help a bad show. But knowing what’s behind a show might encourage me to give it a second chance. A couple of the new sitcoms this fall and later for mid-season are actually autobiographical, which does put a different spin on them. We’ll see on the second viewing.

And that’s it for today. I’m afraid it’s going to be mostly rants and maybe some reviews of streaming video for the rest of the week, but I’ll make up for it Friday – there are about 30 new shows/specials/movies up for this weekend.
